Health Department decision questioned
PA Wellington The Friends of the Earth group will ask the Ombudsman to inquire into the Health Department’s decision not to prosecute three companies which have used a food irradiation process. A spokesman, Mr Bob Tait, said that depending on legal advice, the group was prepared to go as far as a private prosecution. - :.. . . .
The Minister of Health, Dr Bassett, and the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, had failed to respond to submissions that the companies should be prosecuted for breaching the 1984 Food Regulations, he said. Mr Tait also met Health Department officials about the decision. He said there must be a strong deterrent ® irradiation abuse.
