The day in Parliament
PA Wellington Mr W. F. Birch (Nat., Franklin) presented the petition of Mr John McVicar and 224 others, asking the Government to retain the Bombay Post Office, when Parliament sat at 2 p.m. yesterday. The report of the Parole Board was tabled.
Mr D. C. McKinnon (Nat., Rodney) moved a motion of thanks to Mr Gray Nelson, who retired yesterday after 37 years as a Ministerial private secretary.
Ministers answered 14 questions. The House passed a motion recommending to the Gover-nor-General the appointment of Nadja Tollemache, of Auckland, as an Ombudsman.
It also moved leave for the Justice and Law Reform Select Committee to sit during the sitting of the House today. Members then began the weekly general debate. Debate was interrupted when the House adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m.
Debate on the bill continued when the House resumed at 7.30 p.m.
The bill received its second reading after a 43-24 division. Members began debating the introduction of the Company Name Aquisition Compensation BiU in the name of Mr D. A. Graham (Nat., Rernuera). The bill’s introduction was defeated on a 42-28 division.
Members then began debating the introduction of the State-Owned Enterprises Amendment Bill in the name of Mr lan McLean (Nat., Tarawera).
The debate was interrupted when the House adjourned at 10.30 p.m. *
