O’Kane hammers rival
NZPA-Reuter Special correspondent Preston, Lancashire New Zealand’s Dene O’Kane sailed through the Embassy world .snooker second qualifying round at Preston yesterday, hammering David Gilbert, of Essex, 10-2. The Aucklander, aged 24, built a 132-break as his platform on Tuesday arid went on to take seven frames in a row before bis rival replied. The huge break, his best achieved in the United Kingdom, stands him in line for £5OOO ($14,000) as the prize for the highest break. He had one slight lapse in the eleventh frame, knocking only one point to his rival’s 78, but he bounced back to seal victory with a 56-13 frame win.
The modest O'Kane would not predict how far he would go in the $1.14 million jackpot tournament. He said, however: "I’ve been over in England for a month and everything is slotting into place. I’m playing well and expect to meet Yorkshire’s lan Williamson in the next stage.”
O’Kane needs to defeat the Yorkshireman to come up against the South African, Peter Francisco, with the winner going into the last 32 and facing the world-ranked No. 2, Cliff Thorburn, in the televised stages at Sheffield.
