Pairs and singles fencing featured

Two fencing competitions — one for pairs and the other for singles — will carry total prizemoney worth more than $3750 at the SouthIsland machinery field days at Lincoln.

The pairs event on Wednesday, sponsored by New Zealand Wire Industries and Gallagher Electronics, will require entrants to build a five-wire Insultimber fence, 60 metres long.

The contest will be judged on time, workmanship and appearance, electrical connections, strainer assemblies, wire tension and tie-offs, and economy of material. The first three placegetters will receive product vouchers.

The singles competition on Thursday will require entrants to erect 60 metres of Hurricane goat fence. The winner will win a trip to the 19th Golden Pliers Fencing Championship at Mystery Creek, Hamilton, as well as product vouchers. Second and third placegetters will receive cash and product vouchers.

Competitors in the singles event will have to put up two strainer assemblies, nine intermediate posts, and hang a 3 metre gate. Judging will be based on speed, quality and appearance with particular attention being paid to height, line, morticing, spacing, stapling and tie-offs. A break-down of the points is: Quality and appearance: strainer and assemblies 70 points, intermediate 40 points, goat fence 40 points, gate 40 points. Load or tension: strainer assemblies 60 points, footing 20 points, wire 10 pointe. Time: 60 pointe. Tidiness: 10 pointe. Safety: 10 pointe.
