Head for an autumn break
Why not take advantage of the settled autumn weather and spend a few days at Kaikoura. Autumn colours dramatise the landscape. The mountains, already dusted with snow, curve upwards from the sea, making the
area an ideal one for the artist or photographer. Seals and seabirds are plentiful around the peninsula, so bring your binocular and suitable footwear. The South Bay picnic
and barbecue area is a pleasant base for snorkelling, yachting, windsurfing, water ski-ing, fishing, or just paddling around in the rock pools. If you prefer the bush, the Puhi Puhi Valley, Bkm north of the township, also has an attractive picnic and barbeque area alongside a loop track amid the native trees. OUTDOOR ACTION For those wanting a taste of outdoor action, surfing and scuba-diving are popular all year round. You can hire vehicles, canoes or bicycles; take a scenic flight over the peninsula or mountains, go horsetrekking on the foothills, visit a farm or go on a four-wheel outback excursion. Kaikoura has all the
variety for your breakaway. WHEN IT’S WET If you are unlucky enough to meet up with rain, the museum is open at week-ends, limestone cave tours operate daily, and Fyffe House, a pottery and the aquarium are open daily. Enjoy a meal of freshly caught seafood at one of the restaurants, or relax in a hotel bar of your choice. Several indoor recreational sports and cultural clubs meet regularly and welcome visitors. All in at the Information Centre, opposite the Memorial Gardens on the foreshore, or write to P.O. Box 6 for any information you require for an enjoyable stay.
