Mounter undaunted

Television New Zealand’s proposal for a sateL lite television service to' the South Pacific had support in principle from the majority of South Pacific countries, the directorgeneral of TVNZ, Mr Julian Mounter, has said. The New Zealand broadcasting team had just returned from a special South Pacific regional telecommunications meet-

ing in Suva, at which the TVNZ proposals were discussed.

TVNZ had hoped for agreement from Pacific Island nations that its proposal for a public broadcasting television service was the ideal way to proceed. That agreement was not reached at the Suva meeting. “While the result was not all that we had hoped

for, the door to dialogue is still open,” Mr Mounter said.

Several problems had still to be overcome, funding for the project had still to be identified, and island States had to specify the type of service jvhich they required.

Mr Mounter said TVNZ would continue to work on the proposal.
