AUSTRALIA Investors sell industrials

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed lower yesterday as investors sold off leading industrial stocks ahead of today’s release of the February balance of payments figures. Trading was moderate with some selected buying of gold stocks stemming losses in the resources sector. Leading media stock News Corp finished 20c up at 2320, John Fairfax gained 30c to 1480, ICI 18 to 390, and Arnotts 20 to 600 c following healthy interim profits. Resources leader BHP closed 10 down at 1080 on profit-taking after earlier dropping to 1075. About a million shares were exchanged while its associate, Bell Resources, drifted off 3 to 462. In the oil sector. Santos and Bridge Oil both lost 4 to 402 and 126 respectively, Hartogen fell 10 to 280 but Ampol Exploration gained 10 to 370. Aberfoyle was the highlight of the mining sector, jumping 120 c to 1300 ahead of a five-for-two bonus issue. Metana gained 60c to 1030, Emperor 20 to 840 and Renison 10 to 1360 c. Poseidon shed 40 to 790, Central Norseman 20 to 1400 and CRA 8 to 672. Western Mining was heavily traded, but was steady at 650.
