United impresses
Christchurch United continued its impressive early season form with a crushing 4-0 win over its fellow national league team, Dunedin City, in a friendly match at English Park last night The United coach, lan Marshall, was well pleased with his team’s effort and said they appeared to be creating more goal scoring chances than last season. Dunedin made a good start to the match, forcing numerous corners in the opening stages but United slowly assumed dominance through Keith Braithwaite and Graeme Archer in midfield. The All White striker, John Hanson, had United’s first clear cut chance but the veteran keeper, Jim Taylor, thwarted him. Hanson again went close after 30 minutes when his strong header rapped the post and got his on the stroke of
half-time. He burst clear from halfway, held off a defender and slipped the ball past Taylor for a 1-0 lead. The second half was virtually all United, and Braithwaite scored the game’s best goal after 75 minutes. He flicked a free kick to Johaan Verweij, collected the return header and crashed home a shot from the edge of the Dunedin penalty area. Verweij had the simple task of scoring United’s third when he finished off good work by Paul Nicholls after 80 minutes and then Nicholls capped a busy match by scoring United’s fourth. Braithwaite looped a ball over the hesitant Dunedin defence and Nicholls crashed a volley past Taylor to end the scoring and the match. Result: Chch United 4 (J. Hanson, K. Braithwaite, J. Verweij, P. Nicholls) beat Duneffin 0. *
