Little joy for ‘smugglers’
By
JOHN COFFEY
Enterprise went unrewarded for most of those who attempted to smuggle their own liquor supplies into the third cricket test at Lancaster Park yesterday.
One group forced a gap, about 40cm wide, in the corrugated iron fence behind the embankment.
But officials quickly
learned what was happening and a security guard was positioned in the area until repairs could be made to the fence.
Several attempts were also made to throw bundles of cans over the perimeter fences.
One lot of three dozen cans landed close to the Canterbury Cricket Association’s chairman, Mr Brian Adams, the
association’s secretary, Mr Brian Eathorne, and a police inspector. If an accomplice had been stationed inside the ground, the sight of the uniformed inspector caused his retreat. When the perpetrator arrived on the scene, he had the mortification of being informed his “liquid assets” had been confiscated.
There are several designated licensed areas at the park for the test, but beer may only be purchased — in 20oz paper cups — from the sales outlets behind three of the grandstands and on the south ground.
Mr Adams said he was satisfied with security arrangements and crowd behaviour yesterday.
