Exemptions political—M.P.

Wellington reporter The Government has taken a political stance in exempting Greymouth, Gisborne and Wanganui from harbour board corporatisation, said the Opposition spokesman on transport, Mr Winston Peters. The only explanation for the three exemptions was that they were in highly marginal seats, he said. Mr Peters welcomed

the objective of making harbour boards more efficient, competitive and profitable, but he said that the proposals lacked certainty and definition. There would be much soul-searching in some provincial areas about the viability of their operations under the Minister’s proposals. “It is certain that a number of boards will in fact cease to operate their trading functions,” Mr

Peters said. Harbour boards had a right to know how their assets would be evaluated and transferred to the new companies, and degree of indebtedness the new companies would have, he said. Mr Peters also said that some of Mr Prebble’s comments yesterday would be offensive to those harbour boards with a record of sound management.
