A day at a veterinary clinic ... Lucy, the dog, receives attention from Siobhan Van der Werk, a veterinary technician. In the background, a veterinarian, Dr Bernard Carroll (right), with an assistant nurse, operates on a cat. Such “behind the scenes” activities can be seen by the public this morning at the newly established Hyde Park Veterinarian Clinic in Avonhead. Dr Carroll is one of four veterinarians who will give free pet care advice at the open day at the clinic, at 76 Withells Road, from 9 a.m. to 12 pjn. The veterinarians will not have time to see pets. People would, however, have the opportunity to watch cyro surgery (surgery by freezing), radiotherapy and electrosurgery (a cutting method using electrolysis), said the organiser of the open day, Dr Euan Purdie. Fleas and worms will also be on display under microscopes. Other displays will include general tips on pet care, and how and when to vaccinate animals. The clinic has been open for about 16 days.
