Meat report

PA Wellington Demand for all meats in Britain this week has been good. Sales at all levels are expected to increase as buyers start to stock up for the Easter trade, the New Zealand Meat Producers Board said in its weekly market report. Domestic lamb prices increased by 5p a pound at live auction and remained largely unchanged at hooks level.

On the Smithfield market, old season’s New Zealand PL grade lambs were quoted at 58.5 to 60p a pound (362 c to 372 c a kg), and new season’s PLs were quoted at 62.5 to 65p a pound (387 c to 403 c a

kg). The United States imported manufacturing beef market has been firm this week. With the combination of lower than expected beef supplies and shipping space being tight, there has been a shortage of spot market beef. Lean product which seems to be in short supply is expected to maintain its price level. Traders are uncertain how the rest of the market will do in the weeks ahead. Bull beef prices were quoted at SUSI.OI a pound cif (394 c a kg) up by USlc a pound, and cow beef was quoted at US9B.SC a pound cif (384 c a kg) up by USl.5c a pound.
