West Coast ’quake felt in Chch
PA Wellington An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the West Coast east of Westport at 2.5 p.m. yesterday. The earthquake was felt in Westport, Greymouth, and Christchurch but there was no report of damage. A seismologist, Mr Murray Lowry, said the earthquake was deep, and after-shocks were not expected. Deep earthquakes occasionally came in pairs but usually the second followed soon after the first.
"Apart from being connected to the plate movement this earthquake is of no direct consequence to
the other earthquakes felt in New Zealand,” Mr Lowry said. The earthquake was probably less than 100 km deep, moving on a line between Westport and Wellington. The Seismological Observatory did not have enough information to determine its exact position, he said.
A small earthquake, enough to waken people, shook eastern Bay of Plenty at 4.30 a.m. yesterday.
No report of damage was received, according to the Whakatane police. The jolt measured between 3 and 4 on the Richter scale, seismologists said.
