Wide variety for good family day

A wide variety of displays, trade exhibits and entertainment will provide a good family day for country and city folk alike.

Mr John (J. D.) Macfarlane is bringing his replica cob coach to the show and will give rides in the coach pulled by five horses. Proceeds from this will go toward the Anakiwa Outboard Bound Trust fund. Constable Alan Stevenson and his mount, Crunch, will lead the grand parade along with the R.N.Z.A.F. Wigram Band, led by Flight Sergeant W. Aldridge. This is the first time the band has been to Cheviot and the association looks forward to the entertainment. Other items of interest will be a display of flowers in the flower section by the Cheviot Garden Club, which is also decorating the feature marquee.

Vintage enthusiasts will also be entertained. The Historical Machinery Society will have a display of working engines. The feature marquee will have displays and promotion material for angora rabbits and their products. The Canterbury Mohair Association will have information on their association, Mohair products and entries. Alpine wear will treat the fashion enthusiasts to displays of sheep and other skin products, while Waitaki New Zealand Refrigeration will also display skins and hides.

C. S. Stevens, Ltd, will show those who have tried to cut up a mutton just how easy and tastefully it can be done.

The second round of the Apex Tyres, Ltd,

F.E.I. event will be held at Cheviot, with it ending at Hawarden the following Saturday. The hunter events are once again being sponsored by McAlpines (Hanmer), Ltd, and Nu-Look Windows (Christchurch), Ltd. McAlpines has put forward $lOO for the winner of the open hack event, and Nu-Look Windows has provided $5O as a prize for the champion pony hunter. The wool section will have the Silver Kiwi Wool-Judging Competition, which runs for most of the day and involves eight fleeces of different breeds. Competitors have to give the breed of sheep, the micron count and yield. The competition is sponsored by Wrightson Dalgety. Young farmers will have the opportunity to test their skills in a flock sheep judging competition, while Corriedale sheep will be to the fore in the sheep section. The Corriedale Society is running a promotion in support of this popular breed of sheep. There will be an information tent near the sheep pens. Pyne, Gould Guinness is supporting the promotion with special prizes. Shearing is expected to be a popular spectator draw card. The machineshearing section is run in three classes and attracts entries from throughout Canterbury. The competition is part of the Canterbury circuit, which culminates at the Canterbury A. and P. Show in November.

National dancing also attracts entries from far afield. This colourful event continues throughout the day until about 3 p.m.
