Wran, media fined for contempt
NZPA-AAP Sydney The former New South Wales premier, Neville Wran, has been fined sAust2s,ooo ($30,000) for saying he believed in the innocence of the late High Court Justice, Lionel Murphy. The New South Wales Court of Appeal imposed the fine after earlier finding Mr Wran guilty. of contempt of court.
The court also fined Nationwide News, Ltd, sAust2oo,ooo for publishing Mr Wran’s remarks on the front page of the “Sydney Daily Tele-
grapn. In a separate judgment, the court fined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation sAustlOD,ooo, and lan Carroll, the executive producer of its defunct news programme, “The National,” sAust2ooo. It had found earlier that a programme linking Mr Justice Murphy and the “Age” tapes was in contempt of court. The programme was broadcast on March 11, 1985, four days before the committal hearing against Mr Justice Murphy started.
