Rowers assault crew member

PA Dunedin Three members of a rowing team aiming to win a national title assaulted the fourth member of their crew when he decided to withdraw from the team, the District Court at Dunedin was told.

John Robert Bayne, aged 22, an electrician, Kelvin Lloyd Maker, aged 22, a student, and David Murray Hanan, aged 19, a student, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to assaulting Mark William Bunting. The police prosecutor, Sergeant Allan Bremner, said the trio gave Mr Bunting two black eyes and a bleeding nose at Twizel on December 29 last year. were attending a

rowing training school at Twizel. Bayne, Maker and Hanan were very disappointed by Mr Bunting’s decision to withdraw from the team. Mr Jim Hanan, defending, said that as each had already been fined $lOO (which was given to the Twizel branch of the Red Cross) when they were disciplined by the rowing club, a small fine might be appropriate. They spent a whole day in the cells when they were arrested, he added. But Judge Mahon said a minor fine would be a totally inappropriate penalty.

He convicted Bayne, Maker and Hanan and remanded each on bail for sentence later this month.
