Schoolboy wins award
John Juriss, of Avonhead, with his Benson and Hedges Fashion Design Award presented in Wellington last evening. Susan Trainor, formerly of Christchurch, models his winning navy and white design on stage at the Michael Fowler Centre.
The Burnside High School pupil, who is 17, became probably the youngest winner in the history of the event when he beat established designers for the Wool in Fashion Award.
The judges commended his sense of line and style. John Juriss, a firsttime entrant in the awards, said earlier this week that he was “really shocked” to receive three nominations for competition. His mother, who had been a dressmaker, and family and friends had encouraged his interest in fashion, he said. His parents and a friend were in the audience when he won.
He hopes to take the Wellington Polytechnic’s fashion design course. This year he is studying for Sixth Form Certificate with clothing as one of his subjects. He is also doing a part-time pattern drafting course. His designs were made up by Bibba Dressmaking, of Riccarton. Details, page 14
