Wellington wool prices up

PA Wellington Prices increased steadily with a strong tone evident at the Wellington wool sale yesterday, according to the official report. Buying came from Eastern European sources, New Zealand carpet mills and merchant scourers, and China.

The offering of 23,078 bales was made up of mature fleece, 13 per cent; second-shear, 47 per cent; first lambs’ wool, 25 per cent; bulky skirtings, 2 per cent; and clothing oddments, 9 per cent. The market, compared with the ChristchurchInvercargill sale of March

5, was fleece wool in sellers’ favour, secondshear to 2 per cent dearer, and lambs’ wool to 2.5 per cent to 5 per cent dearer. The Wool Board bid on 198 bales (1.2 per cent) and bought or had passed to it 36 bales (0.2 per cent).

The market indicator for greasy wool was 427 c a kilogram and 574 c for clean wool.
