United hopes to end series on high note

United hopes to end its Lion Red Series national softball league campaign this week-end by moving another couple of places up the table. The Canterbury club champion side will have its second three-game week-end in the North Island on end. Tonight United will meet the points leader, Cardinals (Hutt Valley), at Fraser Park and games follow against Pukekohe tomorrow and Fraser Tech (Hamilton) on Sunday.
With three wins under
its belt United is out of relegation danger in eighth-equal position in the 12-team league. Another two wins would put it in at least sixth-equal position. “I’d be happy with that,” said the coach, Leon Fife, yesterday. United will be without its specialist third baseman, Maia Toa, for the first two games, but he will fly up to Hamilton on Sunday for the contest against Fraser Tech. Invercargill Demons, the only other South Island side in the in-
augural national league, also has three games over the week and one win will end its relegation worries. The draw is (home team mentioned first): — Friday: Cardinals v. United. Saturday: Pukekohe v. United, Fraser Tech v. Demons, Poneke-Kll-birnie v. Hawke’s Bay Wreckers, Hutt Valley Marist v. Auckland Marist, Cardinals v. Birkenhead (North Shore), Johnsonville v. Auckland Ramblers. Sunday: Pukekohe v. Demons, Fraser Tech v. United, Poneke-Kilbirnie v. Auckland Marist, Hutt Valley Marist v. Wreckers, Cardinals v. Ramblers, Johnsonville v. Birkenhead, Johnsonville v. Demons.
