Tennis juniors win cup
Undefeated Canterbury junior tennis teams carried off the Pyne Gould Guinness Cup in a quadrangular tournament at Blenheim.
The 16-years side beat Marlborough, seven matches to two. Hutt Valley. 6-3, and Nelson, 6-3. The 14-years combination conceded only five rubbers, downing Hutt Valley, 6-3, Nelson. 9-0, and Marlborough, 7-2. Andrew Bruce had a particularly successful week-end, conceding only four games in six sets in the course of winning all three of his
singles encounters. He was also undefeated in doubles in the 16-years division.
Brendon Furness was also a force for Canterbury in this grade, his only difficulty in the top position being with Hutt Valley’s Michael Davis, to whom he dropped a set. In the 14-years matches, Aaron Orangi breezed through his three singles duels, surrendering a mere nine games in the process, and Cazna Ratana had a perfect record in singles and doubles, winning all her matches impressively.
