SIDELINES
ALTHOUGH IT IS a rare accomplishment, Todd Skilling, of Canterbury, is not the only 14-year-old cyclist to have won a title at the New Zealand track championships. Skilling gained his gold medal in the novice 500 m event at Te Awamutu last week-end. Another Canterbury cyclist, Ray Knight, was also that age when he won the novice sprint at Kew Bowl, Invercargill, in the late 19605.
THE WINNER of the Thomas Cook national women’s bowls singles title in Queenstown next week will collect an extra prize — a trip to the Australian national singles in Sydney about this time next year. The New Zealand national singles, now in its 30th year, is for the 24 centre champions, and the favourite this time would have to be Ann Katavich (Waitemata). She was the winner in 1985 and the runner-up last year to Southland’s Alice Lloyd. Christchurch will be represented by Peg Wood field, of Linwood.
