Wellington bouts for three Canty boxers
Three of Canterbury’s best-performed amateur boxers, all of them trained by Peter Bell, are to begin their 1987 campaigns with bouts in Wellington on March 21.
Michael Bell, Tod Hazeldine and Danny Morris are to compete in preliminaries to a professional matching. The national light middleweight champion and a very wellperformed New Zealand representative last season, Bell is giving away weight to meet Brent Jackson. Although Jackson was the runner-up to the rugged Tom Fusitua (Auckland) in the 1985 national tournament, Bell will be strongly favoured to win and consolidate his
position in the New Zealand squad. Hazeldine, a former New Zealand intermediate title-holder, has been drawn against Andrew Vincent in a light middleweight event. Vincent represented Wellington last year. A newcomer to Peter Bell’s gymnasium after previously boxing at the Richmond Working Men’s Club, Morris has a welterweight matching with Stewart Pauling, who earned a reputation as something of a knock-out specialist during several
years competing in Australia. Should Morris succeed against Pauling, it is intended he next take on Tavelu loane (Hutt Valley), a Western Samoan representative at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and runner-up in the 1985 national championship. In spite of having had to carry out their preparations within their own gymnasium, Mr Bell said all three boxers were in fine fighting trim and he was confident of striking a treble in Wellington.
