PA Wellington Members welcomed an Indonesian Parliamentary delegation when Parliament sat at 2 p.m. yesterday. The Speaker, Dr Wall, said the Governor-General had recommended an appropriation of public money for the purposes of the Higher Salaries Commission Amendment Bill, the International Terrorism Emergency Powers Bill, the Police Complaints Authority and Miscellaneous Amendments Bill, the Social Security Reciprocity with Australia Bill, the Statutes Amendment Bill, and the Summary Proceedings Bill. The Junior Opposition Whip, Mr R. McD. Gray (Clutha), made a personal explanation concerning the eviction from the House last sitting week of four Opposition members.
Mr H. N. Austin (Nat., Bay of Islands) presented the petition of Mrs Glynis Macintosh and 2051 others calling for the Kawakawa automatic telephone exchange to be linked for free subscriber dialing to the Kaikohe exchange. Mr J. J. Terris (Lab., Western Hutt) presented the petition of Jean Marjory Griffiths and 600 others calling for the retention of the Maungaraki Post Office.
Mr G. E. Lee (Nat., Hauraki) presented the petition of Merl Howard and 91 others calling for the retention of the Waihau Post Office.
Mr W. R. Storey (Nat., Waikato) presented the petition of Mrs G. Boyd and 50 others calling for the clarification of the status of 65 apprentices employed by
State Cpal. IVJip.es in Huntly... ' 'Ministers answered 15 questions. The Speaker rejected a request by Mr lan McLean (Nat., Tarawera) for a snap debate on coalminers who will be laid off under the Government’s State Service restructuring.
He allowed a further request by the Chief Opposition Whip, Mr D. C. McKinnon (Nat., Albany) for a snap debate on the Defence Review.
At the conclusion of the debate, the chairperson of the Social Services Select Committee, Mrs Annette King (Lab., Horowhenua), moved the reporting back of the committee’s consideration of a petition from the antismoking group. Ash, calling for the banning of smoking in enclosed public spaces. The report, calling for favourable recommendation with certain provisos, was agreed to. Mrs King also moved the reporting back of the committee’s consideration of a petition calling for the reappointment of a resident Constable for Kotamari, Mohaka, Rapunga and surrounding districts. The debate continued when the House resumed at 7.30 p.m.
The bill was reported back. Members then began debating the third reading of the Recreation and Sport Bill. It received its third reading. Members then began debating the third reading of the Education Amendment Bill (No. 3), which was givenits third reading. Members then began debating the third reading of the Weights and Measures Bill, which was given its third reading. Members then began debating the third reading of the Pesticides Amendment Bill. It was given a third reading.
Members resumed debate on the committal stages of the Housing Corporation Amendment Bill. The debate was interrupted when the House rose at 10.30 p.m.
