Thieves strip invalid’s flat
After a rare night out a multiple sclerosis sufferer, Mr Devon Basher, returned home on Saturday to find his small Christchurch flat had been ransacked by burglars.
Mr Basher, aged 40, lost virtually the entire contents of his flat.
“They even stripped the bed. I cannot afford to replace any of my gear,” he said.
Among the items stolen were a microwave oven, cooking utensils, an answerphone, a computer, a stereo, a clock, a type-
writer, and 150 music cassettes, Mr Basher’s lifetime collection.
Mr Basher, who is on an invalid’s benefit of $ll2 a week, said he could not afford to have the items insured. He estimated he was about $6OOO out of pocket.
Mr Basher said he had not been able to work for three years and used a wheelchair to get about when he went out.
“It makes me angry to think that there are people out there who feel they can just walk in and take everything,” he said.
