Frigate for Singapore?
Wellington reporter
The Government is seriously considering basing a ’frigate at Singapore, alternating with Australia. The Minister of Defence, Mr O’Flynn, told Parliament yesterday that this had been proposed during the recent visit here of his Australian
counterpart, Mr Kim Beazley.
He said Australia had invited New Zealand to join in providing shore facilities and stationing one of its frigates at Singapore. “That is under the closest possible consideration by this Government. It is an excellent idea,” said Mr O’Flynn.
During his visit, Mr Beazley declined to comment on New Zealand’s plans to remove its Army battalion from Singapore by 1989. But he pointed to the value of a Western presence in the region, particularly because of the Soviet naval presence at Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam.
