Drug swoop nets Customs
NZPA-AAP Sydney Two Customs Department officials, including a senior investigation officer, were among seven people arrested in New South Wales yesterday over the attempted importation of heroin worth SAustS million ($7.5 million). The AustraHan Federal Police alleged that the senior official masterminded the smuggling scheme in which heroin was said to have been concealed in soccer balls. A spokesman said four men and three women would be charged with the importation and possession of a narcotic, and conspiracy to import a narcotic. The seven were arrested yesterday when the police raided homes in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, and on the central coast, and found 5.6 kg of heroin worth sAust6 million. The senior investigator was formerly an officer in the now-defunct Federal Narcotics Bureau and the U.K. Customs Department, the spokesman said.
