Huntly workers strike
PA Hamilton State Coal workers at Huntly went on strike yesterday — a 24-hour action in protest at mass job cuts in the town. The cuts will result in State Coal’s workforce of 922 dropping to 438 when it becomes a corporation on April 1. The strike decision was taken at a meeting of the Waikato Miners’ Union yesterday. The union has also decided to disaffiliate from the Labour Party. The Huntly West mine
delegate, Mr Kevin Elsb’ury, said that the union had “nothing else left we can fire at the Government but it shows how we feel, I think.” The union also decided to forbid Labour Party Waikato candidates from speaking at union meetings, “until the Government treats Huntly with dignity and lives up to the principles it stands for.” The rally unanimously called for a six-month deferral of the April 1 job deadline so workers can be better prepared.
