Doors on ferries ‘superior’

PA Wellington New Zealand’s Cook Strait rail ferries have structurally superior stern doors and greater freedom between door openings and the water than their English counterparts, according to a rail ferries executive. Railways Sea Rail manager, Ivan Gough, said Cook Strait ferries did not have bow doors like the stricken English Channel ferry Herald of Free Enterprise. Mr Gough said because of the specially designed square stem of the Cook Strait rail ferries, and their height above the water, the likelihood of a similar accident was minimal.
