$340,000 for standardbred filly at National Sale

By

JEFF SCOTT

Harness racing sales entered a new dimension yesterday at the 43rd National Select Yearling Sale in Christchurch when the top filly sold for a mammoth $340,000, while two other fillies sold for $lBO,OOO.

‘“We have just seen the start of a new era — that of the investment filly,” said Mr Bruce Barlass of Wrightson Bloodstock, after the record-breaking sale in which 153 lots sold for an aggregate of 12,068,000 — an average of $13,516. ' Roydon Reign, as expected, was the star lot of »e sale. The sister to

Roydon Glen was knocked down to Mr John O’Dea of Hawera, representing South Taranaki Bloodstock and Curtins Farms, who combined forces going into the sale with the intention of buying three of the top lots. “After seeing the others we found she (Roydon Reign) was the only one that couldn't be faulted

and we had to reorganise our buying on just the top lot,” said Mr John Curtin, of Curtins Farm, Reporoa. “I can't complain with that,” quipped the vendor Mr Roy McKenzie of Roydon Lodge Stud, shortly after the bidding, adding be thought she would bring $250-$300,000. Bidding quickly reached $150,000 then came to a standstill with Nevele R Stud proprietor, Mr Wayne Francis, thinking he momentarily had a closing bid. After a minute break while prospective purchasers started counting their assets, the bidding began with a flurry again. Upon reaching $220,000, fresh blood entered the cross-bidding in the form of Yonkers Breeding and Racing Partnership and Great Northern Bloodstock (NZ) Ltd, who like Curtins Farm and South Taranaki Bloodstock, Ltd, had joined forces as they strived for a once in a lifetime chance. Also bidding up to $280,000 was an agent for the Te Aroha-based auctioneers, John F. Jones, Ltd. However, when the bid of $320,000 by Yonkers and Great Northern was upped to $340,000 by South Taranaki and Curtins Fann, the former decided to call it quits and the latter became the new owners of the sister to champion pacer Roydon Glen (22 wins, Auckland Cup) and half-sister to
