AUSTRALIA Markets end easier

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier as profit-takers emerged in the wake of a series of record performances last week. Key industrials attracted most selling pressure following strong rises last week, while early selling among gold stocks gave way to qualified support in trading subdued by the closure of Melbourne markets for the Moomba public holiday. Turnovers were subdued by the Melbourne holiday although many Melbourne brokers channeled business through the Sydney market as 102.53 million shares worth sAustl6l.Bl million changed hands with rises outnumbering falls by three to two. Among key industrials, News Corp fell 50 to 2430, BTR Nyiex was off 40 at 1960, Arnotts shed 30c to 520 as 20c gains sent Bell Group to 1020 and lEL to 560. Brokers said financial stocks were also under pressure as hopes that interest rates may ease in the near future appeared to be fading. Among the banks Westpac shed 5c to 460, while 4c declines took National to 544 and ANZ to 542. In the resource sector, BHP was near the top of turnover lists with 3.4 million shares exchanged as investors sought to gain entry to listing of its new gold float. BHP closed steady at 1060. Gold stocks were mixed as many issues overcame early weakness despite a slight weakening in international bullion prices. Among the losers, Central Norseman was down 40c at 1450 and Kidston shed 30c to 740 as Metana rose 50c to 960 and Poseidon rose 22c to 832. Interest in diamond stocks waned after heavy ac-
