Ryan retains N.Z. discus crown with 49m throw

Elizabeth Ryan (Canterbury) retained her national women’s discus crown with an outstanding throw of 49.36 m in the centennial New Zealand track and field championships at Wellington on Sunday. Her Auckland rival, Nereda Morris, could only manage 46.20 m and was well beaten. Canterbury’s Olympic representative, Peter Renner, cruised to an effortless victory — his fifth — in the 3000 m steeplechase. In the junior ranks,. Grant Gilbert (400 m and Steve Honings (high jump), both of Canterbury, had splendid wins. Gilbert won the 400 m final in 47.62 s and Rollings won the junior high jump with a national colts record leap of 2.08 m.
