Top women’s cricket sides win easily

Wins were recorded by Riccarton and St Albans in the penultimate games of the senior women’s cricket competition on Sunday. These two teams, separated by just 5.83 points, will meet in the final game of the season to decide the postChristmas competition winner. The slow pitches at Porritt Park affected scoring. Asked to bat first, Riccarton was 108 for nine at the end of 60 overs. The very consistent Deborah Ford again topscored with a well-compiled 43. For Sydenham, Kathryn Ryan and Jenny Turner both bowled tidily and economically. The Sydenham batsmen were pinned down by an accurate Riccarton attack. Trudy Anderson (13) and Wendy Giles (14) top-scored for Sydenham. Gail Heather, who recently transferred from Wellington, conceded only six runs off almost 12 overs while Ford completed a useful double in taking five wickets for 13, including two sharp caught and-bowled chances. Sydenham was dismissed

for 66, well short of its target. Lancaster Park fared even worse against St Albans, putting together just 43 after St Albans had made 125. The mainstay of the St Albans innings was Sarah Illingworth, who made a fine 65. She drove the ball attractively in making a career-best score. The Lancaster Park innings started disastrously with three wickets falling without a run being scored. The side never recovered, Barbara Carr (10) being the only player to reach double figures. For St Albans Tracy McNamara had an excellent spell of bowling, knocking the top off the Park bowling and finishing with four for eight. Brigit Legg and Catherine Campbell also troubled the batsmen, each picking up two wickets. Points with one game to play; Riccarton 51.96, St Albans 46.13, Sydenham 17.69, Lancaster Park 9.35.
