Name suppressed on abduction count
Interim suppression of name was granted to a man, aged 32, who appeared before Judge Frampton in the District Court yesterday charged with abduction and the indecent assault of a girl, aged five. In “strenuously” seeking suppression, counsel, Mr Geoffrey Langham, said it appeared there was a psychiatric background to the alleged offence. The Judge granted the application, and remanded the accused in custody to March 23. While on remand a psychiatric report must be made. The accused is charged with abducting the little girl with intent to have sexual intercourse with her, and with indecently assaulting her. The charges relate to an incident in which a girl was taken from outside a hall in Carlyle Street, Sydenham, on Saturday afternoon. She was later found by police a short distance away. INDECENCY CHARGES A further psychiatric report is to be obtained with a view to committing a man, aged 41, to a mental institution. He is charged with indecently assaulting two women, aged 80, and 88,
on February 15. The defendant, an unemployed male nurse, was remanded in custody to March 20. Interim suppression of his name was continued. TOOK TRUCK A man who unlawfully took his employer’s $BO,OOO truck, and trailer, home after drinking, later told police he thought he would be less likely to be stopped by traffic officers than had he been driving a car, said Sergeant Myron Caldwell. Warren Hohapata, aged 41, a driver (Mr Mark Callaghan), admitted converting the vehicle, and driving with an excess blood alcohol level, on February 13. He was convicted and remanded, on bail, to March 23 for sentence. Sergeant Caldwell said the defendant had parked the truck at his employer’s yard in Moorhouse Avfenue at the end of the day’s work. About 11.30 p.m. Hohapata returned to the yard, took the truck without being authorised to do so, and while driving home the vehicle jack-knifed causing $2500 worth of damage, for which compensation was sought. DEPOSITIONS Philippa Penelope Rad-
ley, aged 27, a barmaid, of Dunedin, was remanded to March 24 for depositions to be taken on a charge of importing the drug Buprenorphine into New Zealand. Radley, represented by Mr E. Bedo, was allowed bail of $2OOO. She is jointly charged with two other women, one aged 77, whose depositions were heard last week, and who have been committed for trial. THREE YEARS JAIL A three-year prison term was ordered by Judge Erber for a man who snatched a bag, containing $6OOO in wages, from another man outside a Hornby bank on December 4, last year. John Edward Mills, aged 25, a beneficiary (Mr M. J. Appleby), had earlier admitted robbing an employee of Precision Diecasting, Ltd, at Hornby. During a struggle, in which Mills snatched the bag, and ran off, $4OOO fell out on to the ground. The Judge told Mills that robbery was serious and far too prevalent. He noted that the defendant had a previous conviction in October, 1984, for aggravated robbery.
