Man has legs crushed again
PA Gore A former railway fireman who lost his legs in a railway accident had his artificial legs crushed on Friday in a accident at an Invercargill level-crossing. Mr Cyril Veint aged 65, was waiting in his car at a crossing near the Invercargill railway station at 8.45 a.m. when the accident occurred. A truck and trailer unit was crossing the line when the Southerner express hit the trailer, which contained superphosphate. The trailer reared up
and fell on Mr Veint’s car, crushing the roof. Rescuers had to shovel superphosphate away to get at the car, and firemen used the “jaws of life” to cut Mr Veint out. His artificial legs had been crushed. He was taken to Kew Hospital where he was treated for a cut on the head, and discharged. No-one else was injured in the accident The Southerner’s locomotive was replaced and the train continued its journey, 40 minutes behind schedule.
