Flag-bearer for south

J. J. BOYLE

By

Maestri, an angular chestnut running for the Thistoll stable, gave the South Island its only victory at Trentham on Saturday. An elder half-brother of the promising filly New Wine, Maestri won the class 3 middle-distance race handily by a length and a quarter from Moderation, the only other South Islander in the field. Maestri was showing signs of tenderness after Saturday’s race but the trouble was not serious, and he should be fit to aim for his third successive win on the second day of the Wellington meeting. Maestri was well ridden on Saturday by the Central Districts horseman, Maurice Campbell. John Dowling, who had won on him at Gore the time before, chose to remain in the South Island to ride at the Cromwell meeting on Saturday.
