Violence complaint upheld

PA Wellington A complaint about violence in a 30-second trailer to the television programme, “The Equaliser,” has been upheld by the Broadcasting Tribunal. , Mr Clifford Turner, of Hamilton, had complained that the trailer, shown on Television One on Saturday, March 1, at 8.30 p.m. was violent — a man was shot and a close-up of his anguished face was shown. He did not believe

there was a suitable dramatic context or that the trailer would “sharpen human sensibilities” — conditions to be observed when depicting violence.

In its decision, the tribunal said the trailer included violent incidents but gave no indication of the story-line or dramatic context.

“The likely composition of the audience could be expected to have beeri a wide cross-section of family viewers, including

many children who had just watched the ‘Cosby Show’,” the report said. In making its decision the tribunal said it did not consider the trailer was compiled reasonably or that adequate attention was paid to the likely composition of the audience at the time it was played. It regarded the breach as an error of judgment in an area where there had been no previous decision of programme rules relating to trailers.
