Cyclone adds to aid project work
PA Wellington Cyclone Sally has added several months of work and about $400,000 to the cost of New Zealand’s big aid project to the Cook Islands, says a New Zealand Government official. Although they did their job, the breakwaters at Avarua Wharf were damaged in the storm, said the deputy New Zealand representative to the Cook Islands, Mr Michael Mcßryde. Without the break waters, wharf sheds which were damaged would have been ruined and
shops behind the wharf could have been swept away. Cyclone damage could add several months work and $400,000 cost to the four-year project, Mr Mcßryde said. New Zealand is also paying for container facilities to be built at the wharf. Work on these would now be fitted in with repairs to the present project. New Zealand Army engineers are repairing the damaged wharf sheds. The project is expected to be completed later this year.
