New newspaper for Auckland
PA Auckland Auckland will get a new morning newspaper this year. The “Auckland Sun,” a six-day tabloid, would be published by New Zealand News, Ltd, said the managing director, Mr Michael Forbes. It is more than 40 years since a big daily newspaper was launched in New Zealand. The “Sun” would be independent of its sister newspaper, the 117-year-old “Auckland Star,” and work from separate premises in New North Road, Mr Forbes said. “Extensive research shows that there is a viable commercial de-
mand for an alternative morning newspaper.
“This is bolstered by projections of sustained growth for the region through to the year 2000,” he said. Mr Forbes said New Zealand News had a strong association with Auckland through the “Star,” the “Suburban” and “Courier” community newspaper groups, and other enterprises.
“It is our market and we have the resources and the will to deliver a good morning newspaper to Aucklanders. “The additional competition and the alternative voice can only be healthy for the community,” Mr Forbes said.
