Diocese to celebrate centenary
Canterbury Catholics can look forward to an interesting array of activities when the diocesan centennial celebrations begin in Christchurch in May.
Archives of the Canterbury diocese would be displayed during the centennial celebrations, possibly in conjunction with an exhibition of religious art said the director of Catholic Communications in Christchurch, the Rev. Ray Schmack. The archives had been collected since the diocese was established in May, 1887. A history of the diocese commissioned three years ago from the Rev. Michael O’Meeghan, of Christchurch, would be released during the celebrations, said Father Schmack.
The foreword for the book was written by the Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev. Denis Hanrahan, who died suddenly last month. The centenary would reflect the Church’s unity with other denominations. Organisers hoped each parish would host an ecumenical service throughout the seven-month celebrations. A children’s art competition was also planned. In addition, a celebration banner would be draped across the front of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, said Father Schmack.
A formal opening service would be held on May 10 at the cathedral at 2 p.m. The celebrations would end with a Mass on Sunday, November 22.
