Four boys set out on a two-day adventure with dreams of becoming town heroes and find themselves tested in ways they never imagined in “Stand by Me,” which will start at the Westend tomorrow. The director, Rob Reiner, who is no stranger to youthful story material (“This is Spinal Tap”),

has brought special sensitivity to this story based on a novella, “The Body,” by Stephen King. Unlike anything we have come to expect from King, this autobiographically inspired tale of a quartet of boys coming of age in a small town The grown-up writer (Richard Dreyfuss) relates his memories of his adolescent adventures with three friends in their

hometown in 1959. For several days, they had been following news reports of a boy who went hunting for blueberries in the woods and had not been seen since.

One of the group had overheard his brother reveal that he and a friend had discovered the boy’s body in the deep woods, alongside railroad tracks.
