Container ship for quiet sea voyage?
PA Wellington Four container ships specially fitted for passengers will soon be plying the route between New Zealand and the United States.
The Act/Pace line has refitted four of its cargo vessels to accommodate 10 people, the assistant general manager, Mr David Gill, has said.
The first vessel with its “full load" of passengers will leave Auckland on March 24 and the second ship on April 10.
Each air-conditioned cabin has top-class facilities with its own lounge, pantry, laundry and access to the swimming pool. Mr Gill said initial signs were that the service would be a success.
At a cost of $14,000 return, the voyage was “riot cheap,” he said, but would appeal to a lot of people who had money and sought a quiet sea passage. Though the cargo will be loaded in Wellington, passengers from the capital are required to board at the last port of call — Auckland. Mr Gill said he expected the demand for this form of transport to grow and the service could spread to other container lines.
