Cause of heavy rains
Three separate anti-cy-clones were responsible for the high rainfall in Canterbury the last week, according to the Meteorological Service. The first anticyclone passed over Canterbury during February 27 and 28, bringing moderate rainfall. This was followed by another anticyclone, which deepened by March 2. Another anticyclone then formed in the Tasman Sea, and a south-easterly airflow formed between the two.
This brought heavy rainfall to the east coast of the South Island, the heaviest fall occurring overnight on March 2 and March 3. The heaviest falls were recorded in the Canterbury high country, where more than 300 mm of rain fell in 48 hours.
