Hornby’s final win
Hornby comfortably beat Sumner in the final of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s one-day competition at St Leonards Square. Victory in this Lion Breweries-sponsored contest gave Hornby the chance of a meritorious double, also narrowly leading the two-day competition. Hornby scored 182 for nine wickets after winning the toss and batting. Bruce Scott making 34 and Ron Johnston 32. Peter Boreham took four wickets, but Steve Grimmer won the best bowler and best fielder awards, after claiming three wickets and taking two vital catches.
Although Charlie Cross made a resolute 56 not out, Sumner wickets fell steadily at the other end, and the side was dismissed for 149. Barry Adams took the Hornby bowling award. Cross and Scott the respective batting prizes, and Cross was also named “man of the match.” Scores:-
