Untapped wealth described

NZPA-AAP Canberra Australia could be sitting on an untapped multimillion dollar mineralprocessing industry, according to a report. The Bureau of Resource Economics reported that Australia's competitiveness and strong market positioning meant there was strong potential for the “downstream" processing of iron ore, mineral sands, manganese, and gemstones before they were exported. It said there was moderate potential for a greater processing of Australia’s nickel, copper, lead, and zinc as patterns in the world's industrial activity changed. It saw potential also for an expansion in processing in the already-strong bauxite, alumina, and aluminium industry. The bureau’s first report: "Processing of Australia’s Mineral Exports: An Overview,” was made public by the Resources and Energy Minister, Senator Gareth Evans.
