Performance called off through injury

For only the second time in its 15-year history, the Court Theatre has been forced to cancel one of its performances. Last Friday evening’s performance of the black comedy, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” had to be called off because of an injury suffered by one of the leading players. Geraldine Brophy, who plays Madame de Tourvel, has to fall to one knee in a scene in the play. However, the knee now requires surgery after repeated punishment, six nights a week, since February 6.

The theatre’s publicity officer, Ms Bridget Hanrahan, said that Ms Brophy’s knee was strapped up last Monday, but by Friday her doctors warned that it needed a complete 24-hour rest, or she would have to miss .the remainder of the season.

Even with the respite, the knee will have to be operated on after the play ends on March 12.

Ms Brophy is now doubtful about being in the next production, the Alan Ayckbourn comedy, “A Chorus of Disapproval,” which will begin in late March. Ms Hanrahan said that ticket-holders for the cancelled performance hadbeen offered seats on alternative nights, or could transfer their tickets to the next production.

The only other occasion when the theatre has called off a performance was during a season of "King Lear,” several years ago.
