Ethnic minorities

Sir,—The Wellington Ethnic Affairs Council should be supported in its call for the establishment of a Ministry of Ethnic Affairs. With such catch-cries as “biculturalism” being bandied about by people such as the Minister for the Arts and the Race Relations Conciliator, it is no wonder that New Zealand’s ethnic minorities are becoming jittery. At lasivyear’s Art 2000

cultural summit the only nonMaori minority that had an obvious presence was that of the Samoan community that, under difficult circumstances, tried to voice its concern about the absence of other ethnic minorities. In a conference that was supposed to sum up the past and set goals for the future, our Asiatic, Central and Western European, African, North and South American minorities were ignored. Most of these minorities are now caught in the limbo of “loss of language and cultural identity” that Maoridom is courageously attempting to extricate itself from.—Yours, etc., CHRISTODOULOS E. G. MOISA. ; . February 26, 1987.
