S.C. Board will meet in June
PA Wellington The School Certificate Board will meet in June to discuss pupils’ and parents’ responses to last year’s new School Certificate grading system, said the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, yesterday. The grade description could warrant review in light of criticism, particularly of the C2 grade.
“But I would be very reluctant to change the grades,” Mr Marshall said.
He had looked at every alternative, and all of them were "considerably" less satisfactory. Pupils last year received grades for their
School Certificate examination rather than percentage marks. Grades Al and A2 represented a high level of achievement, Bl and B2 a good level, Cl and C2 an adequate level, and D a limited level. The labelling of C2 as adequate had been criticised because after scaling in some subjects, it could be equivalent to 16 per cent. “The arguments about 16 per cent land C2 have been given a lot of attention. Our priority is not to pull the whole building down where just one brick is the problem,” Mr Marshall said.
