Vatican budget might be published

NZPA-Reuter Rome Pope John Paul II may order that full details of the Holy See’s budget be published this year for the first time, a Vatican source said.

The source said the Pope might make the decision after a meeting of an international commission of cardinals he appointed in 1981 to oversee the finances of the Roman Catholic Church’s central administration.

The Holy See’s budget deficit for 1985 grew to about SUS 39 million, about SUS 11 million more than 1984, according to sparse figures released last October. The deficit year had been

projected at SUS 56 million. The Vatican has in the past released only general figures for its budget, such as income and expenditures, and not a department by department breakdown.

In recent years the deficit had been covered by “Peter’s Pence”—the annual contribution taken up in world churches for the Pope’s use—and by dipping into income from Vatican properties. Earlier, , a cardinal involved in Church administration sent a letter to all Vatican departmental heads urging them to hold down costs.
