Provincial ranking competition keen
In a season in which Canterbury junior tennis players won 10 individual and two team titles in national events, competition for places on the provincial ranking lists has been unusually keen. However, it is not surprising that Andrew Batie has been placed at the head of the 16-years boys’ list, after his New Zealand singles victory in that division and his second placing in the national 18-years grade singles and doubles. Nor is it a shock that Amanda Trail leads the field in both the girls’ 14 and 16yeafs groups after four national championship wins over three age groups, ranging from 14 to 18 years. As expected, Alistair Hunt is the leading boy in the 14years division, and the best of the 12-year-olds are Justin O’Malley, winner of two New Zealand titles in that grade as well as the national primary - school championship, and Catherine Parish. Although the junior season does not end until April, the junior tennis association decided to release the rankings now because many youngsters play in higher divisions at the Easter tournament The lists are:— Girls
