Mrs Kay Burnett, of Marton, has been approved for a heart and lung transplant surgery at London’s Harefield Hospital. The hospital confirmed yesterday that the medical assessment of Mrs
Burnett, aged 37, had been completed and she had been added to the transplant waiting list.
She is the third New Zealander among 165 patients awaiting transplant surgery. The others are Mrs Jacqui Culpan, aged 33, of Auckland and Mr Des Tucker, aged 50, of Wellington.
Mrs Culpan is staying with relatives in Britain while she awaits surgery. Mr Tucker has returned to New Zealand. Harefield Hospital said Mrs Burnett was staying in Britain.
The length of the waiting list means it could be six months or more be-
fore donors become available for the New Zealand patients unless their condition deteriorates.
A fourth New Zealander, Mr David Conway, aged 57, of Auckland, is due to arrive at Harefield Hospital this week-end for assessment for a possible heart transplant.
